This course introduces students to critical design practice by creating objects, projects, and public interventions
I taught this course from 2010 to 2014 in the MFA Design and Technology Program at Parsons The New School for Design and is the primary introduction to the creation of work within a design and technology context and should be seen as the interface for MFADT core topics — Narrative, Computation, and Interactivity — as well as the tripartite of the program: design, technology, and society.
One successful project from this class was the “AstorbetSoup DreamTeam” student project. This project involved giving ourt colorful letters / fridge magnets and having the public write the name of their “heroes” on the large metallic cube in Astor Place, Manhattan. The assignment was called “Instruction Sets for Strangers” where students had to come up with an installation for public space that could engage people on the street.
